The first Mukilteo Free Library Arena Tournament (M-FLAT) was held on Saturday, December 21st of 2024 at the Mukilteo Library meeting room, from 1pm to 5pm. 24 players (the maximum allowed for this event) attended, many accompanied by their parents, given that they were kids.
Although the event was open to adults, no adults played in this first installment. Our youngest participant was Daniel Sandoval, a 1st grader at A.G. Bell Elementary, all the way from Kirkland! This was his first chess tournament. Because of this, he was also our lowest rated participant, based on a NWSRS initial rating of 100. (For first-time tournament players, your initial rating is 100 x your grade, with kindergarteners starting at 100 and adults starting at 1300.) Our oldest participant was Slava Shinkarev, a sophomore at nearby Kamiak high school, who plays for the chess team there on board 1! He was also the highest rated (although chess is a game where age doesn't matter so much, as long as you practice!), with a NWSRS rating of 1515 and a USCF rating of 1459!
The players of the tournament represented several different schools, with some traveling over 20 miles to be there! The breakdown of players from each school were as follows: Mukilteo Elementary had the most players at 6! Followed by nearby Colombia Elementary with 3 players. Endeavor Elementary Mukilteo and Mark Twain Elementary in Kirkland each had 2 players. Lastly, nearby Kamiak high school, nearby Harbour Pointe middle school, Explorer Middle School in Everett, Thornton Creek Elementary in Seattle, Norman Rockwell Elementary in Redmond, Lakeview Elementary in Kirkland, Cascadia Elementary in Seattle, Tambark Creek Elementary in Mill Creek, Brookside Elementary in Shoreline, Little Cedars Elementary in Snohomish, and A.G. Bell Elementary in Kirkland each had 1 player play in the event.
A total of 16 additional players signed up on the wait list! Unfortunately for them, none of the original 24 players dropped out last minute. Given that the event met the cap for attendance, and given that every single game was eventually accounted for, despite difficulties from the T.D. with the relentless speed of games finishing, the event was a resounding success!
Here are our top 6 placers (top quartile)! They each earned a trophy:
1st Place: Michael Makienko 10 points, 12 games
2nd Place: Slava Shinkarev 10 points, 11 games
3rd Place: Grayson Babik 8 points, 12 games
4th Place: Annan Lin 8 points, 10 games
5th Place: Massimo Pirelli 7 points, 13 games
6th Place: Karman Ginotra 7 points, 9 games
For 18 of the 24 players, (a full 3 quarters of the field!), this was their very first rated in-person tournament!

Each tournament game was inputted into SwissSys, and converted into a crosstable (see above ^). The tournament was submitted to Kirk Winges for NWSRS rating on Sunday, December 22nd, at 11:22am. The tournament was rated on Thursday, January 2nd. Here is a link to the crosstable.
